Some children are eating healthy snacks, and it may be thanks to a government program.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says students at elementary schools participating in its "fresh fruit and vegetable program" consumed 15-percent more fruits and vegetables. Program officials say the results are encouraging.

The program started as a pilot back in 2002 and provides free fresh fruit and vegetables to students, outside of regular school meals.
