FPOA President Jacky Parks told the council the union has agreed to forego some benefits of their current contract to help the city during this financial crisis. In return, the union wants their contract extended 18 months.
Some of the concessions officers are willing to give up are uniform allowances and their wellness benefits. But, city manager Mark Scott said the offer doesn't address medical benefits and pension costs that are more costly.
"The contract includes benefit costs that are extraordinary," said Scott. "Very high and very much impossible for the city to afford."
Parks said, "My members took it upon themselves and approved an agreement to bring it to the city and offer them what is valued at actually more than $8.3 million dollars."
The city manager says the latest offer comes with caveats and conditions the city cannot entertain. Council members did not comment on the concessions.
