Swift water rescue crews train at Island Water Park

FRESNO, Calif.

Fresno firefighters are spending time preparing for the rescues ahead. Fresno firefighters with the Urban Search and Rescue team suited up for swift water training at the Island Water Park, Friday.

In the summer, the specialized team will be ready to rescue people from drowning. That act itself can be dangerous and stressful, because victims can sometimes panic.

Firefighters work in teams to calm victims and help them swim to safety. Fire officials said what goes into these lifesaving efforts takes training and work.

Firefighters say they'll need their swimming and rescue skills as they try to save victims from canals and rivers this summer.

It's challenging work, but something they train mentally and physically for. Firefighters have received swift water training this entire month.

With the hot temperatures this weekend, they are urging parents to keep a close eye on their children around water, avoid canals, and to be careful around rivers and lakes.
