June 13 AM Live Ag Report

FRESNO, Calif.

The peak harvest season is still a few weeks away but farmers all over the state are already reporting challenges hiring enough employees.

In some cases farmers have abandoned fields because they didn't have enough people to harvest the crop.

Some farmers continue to increase wages in order to attract people.

They're also delaying farm activities and using crews from other farms.

Harvest season in California typically peaks in late summer.

Farmers markets may be good for more than just getting fresh fruits and vegetables.

A new study shows they're good for building a sense of community.

The US Ag Department says farmers markets have increased by more than 300-percent nationwide during the past two decades.

Officials say markets not only increase sales for local growers but also build a sense of connection between farmers and their urban customers, creating better communities.
