About fifty people competed in the Second Annual Joel Wahlenmaier Shooting Competition. Wahlenmaier was killed along with Reedley Police Officer Javier Bejar after a gun battle with an arson suspect in Minkler three years ago.
Money raised from the shooting competition goes toward a scholarship for the police academy. Organizers say a shooting competition is a great way to keep his legacy alive and also support the academy.
The winner was awarded a gun donated by LR Stones Firearms. Organizers say the competition raised more than $1,000, and they hope to raise even more next year.
