Firefighters from across the state gathered in Northern California Sunday to remember a forest service smokejumper who died in the line of duty.

The private memorial service for Luke Sheehy took place inside the Redding Civic Auditorium. The 28-year-old was hit by part of a falling tree while battling a fire in the Modoc National Forest on June 10. Sheehy was a member of Redding's smokejumper crew for the past five years. He is the first federal firefighter killed on the job in California since 2009.
