Fresno police investigate pursuit that ended in a deadly crash

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif.

The suspect slammed into another car killing that driver.

The suspect has been identified as Walter McDaniel, who was released from Fresno County Jail early July despite having a warrant out for his arrest in Madera County.

Police and cleanup crews were still on the scene of the deadly crash Wednesday night. Two cars were mangled in a grass field after the driver of a 2008 Infinity struck the other car just after 5 p.m. This all stemmed from a police chase.

Detectives with Fresno's Career Criminal Auto Theft Team were following the driver after they got a tip from the Child Abuse Unit that the suspect, 36-year-old Walter McDaniel was in the stolen vehicle. You may recall this is the same individual who just weeks ago was arrested for concealing a missing 10-year-old boy.

Police spotted him with a woman and a 13-year-old boy in the 2000 block of East Pontiac. That is when undercover cops began pursuing him. The chasing police lost sight of the vehicle, but the police chopper was able to track the car down- which was traveling at high speeds.

The driver that was struck in the other car died. The man has yet to be identified but Action News was told he was in his fifties.

McDaniel and his two other passengers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. McDaniel now faces additional criminal charges including evading police, operating a stolen vehicle and for an outstanding search warrant out of Madera County.

Investigators are now trying to determine his relationship with the 13-year-old boy.
