Visalia Military families get help with school supplies

FRESNO, Calif.

The founders of the Visalia Veterans Service Home are collecting supplies that have been donated to 21 Dollar Tree stores. The items will be given away to at least 200 children who have a parent serving in the military. But organizers say no child in need will be turned away.

The school supply give-away is part of Operation Homefront, which aims to support families at home while their loved ones are overseas.

"It's not just about giving a child a piece of paper, giving a military child a pencil, it's about knowing somebody supports them," said Leann Nussberger.

The supplies will be given out at the new Visalia Veterans Service Home on Central and Princeton later this week.

Volunteers put the finishing touches on the home this weekend. The home will provide a place for veterans as they transition from military to civilian life. The first service members are expected to move in over the next two weeks.
