Los Banos police officer shoots man after stabbing

FRESNO, Calif.

Los Banos Police say that they received a call asking them to do a welfare check on an elderly man at the house. The victim reported that he had been assaulted by his 43-year-old son at the home where both of them live.

Police said after the officer arrived, the son stabbed him with a pair of scissors, leaving the officer with a minor wound. The officer said he then drew his firearm and a struggle ensued between the officer and the suspect over the gun.

Investigators said the officer then shot the man twice, hitting him in the left leg and the chest.

The man was airlifted to a Modesto hospital where he died during surgery.

The officer was treated at Los Banos Memorial Hospital and later released.

The officer's name is not being released at this time and has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.
