MB2 Racing of Southern California wants to put in a track for electric go-kart racing. The Clovis City council will decide whether to approve the company's conditional use permit. Council member Nathan Magsig calls it a potentially exciting opportunity.
"As an individual I am excited we do have some interest in that Gottschalks location. It's over 100,000 square feet of commercial space. It's been dark unfortunately for the last few years," Magsig said.
The racetrack would take up over half of the building 60,000 square feet. MB2 operates two tracks in Southern California.
"It's my understanding too that a lot of corporate offices may be attracted to this site because they'll have a conference center there, where employees and individuals can enjoy the racetrack," Magsig said.
Glenn Araki hopes the racetrack is approved. Araki owns PKS Kart supplies. He said the facility would be good for the sport.
"The karts are very similar to what we race in the outdoor circuit. The differences are they are electric powered instead of gas powered," Araki said.
Araki believes people who give indoor racing a try may want to give the outdoor sport a try. Some of these gas-powered karts can hit 100 mph. If the company's conditional use permit is approved Monday night the Sierra Vista Mall can then begin work to prepare the site for an indoor electric kart racetrack.
