Starting next Friday, food stamp benefits will be cut for more than 47 million people. That's about 15 percent of the U.S. population, which is up from 8.7 percent in 2007.
The average benefit per person now stands at a little over $130 a month. That amount will be reduced. The cuts add up to $5 billion. Congress can halt the decision but it is unlikely.
