4 Missing China Peak hikers rescued

FRESNO, Calif.

According to the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, the group was hiking near China Peak Wednesday night. They were apparently trying to find Highway 168 when they became lost.

Sheriff's deputies said the group ended up in a ravine, and it started to get dark. That's when they decided to build a warming fire and call for help.

"Pretty much got stuck because it got really steep. Rather than continue on in darkness, they decided to sit down and wait it out, and that's why we were able to find them," said Sgt. Jared McCormick, Fresno County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office said they feel fortunate rescue crews were able to locate the hikers as quickly as they did.

All four people were brought to safety around 4 a.m. One person suffered a minor injury and all four are said to be doing just fine this morning.
