Man fatally shot by Fresno police officer identified

Action News now knows the identity of the man killed in an officer-involved shooting in Southwest Fresno on Sunday evening.

He has been identified as Joseph Ma, 18, of Fresno.

The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. near Lorena and Bardell avenues. Fresno police said the incident started after two officers pulled over a red BMW. They said the car didn't have a license plate, and the driver made an illegal U-turn.

Authorities said three people were inside the vehicle, but the two passengers jumped out and ran. An officer chased Ma and opened fire in an apartment complex when officers discovered he had a gun.

Police said they arrested the driver, Jose Cardenas, 20, of Fresno, on various drug charges. The third suspect has not been located.
