The California Highway Patrol said a 24-year-old driver in a sedan ran a stop sign at the intersection of Belmont and Monroe and crashed into a Chevy Tahoe. The driver of the sedan died on the scene. A nine year old boy in the Tahoe was also killed.
Authorities say bystanders did what they could before help arrived. "People were trying to use dirt and water to put the fire out before the fire department got there," said Sgt. Joseph Bianchi, California Highway Patrol.
The CHP said a man, woman and two other children were also in the SUV and they survived. The names of the two people who died have not been released.
