Monday was sentencing day for two of three men who investigators say used as many as 80 high school students to remove asbestos from the former Castle Air Force Base in Atwater in 2005.

Investigators say Rudy Buendia, Patrick Bowman and Joseph Cuellar violated federal cleanup laws. They say all three knew the students were being exposed to asbestos, which is known to cause cancer.

A judge sentenced Buendia to two years in prison and Bowman to 27 months. Sentencing for Cuellar is scheduled for June 16. That is also when a restitution hearing is scheduled for all three men.
