1 dead, 1 hurt after shooting and car crash in Central Fresno

FRESNO, Calif.

Fresno police say the shooting happened on Highway 180 near Marks Avenue around 1:40 p.m. They say when the two victims were shot, they took off in their small black car eastbound on the 180. Officers say the driver then ran a red light on Fulton Street near the highway and crashed into a pickup truck.

Police say the shooting victims were trying to rush to Community Regional Medical Center to save themselves, but only one of them made it to the hospital.

"One victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds and is in stable condition, being worked on right now at CRMC," said Fresno police Lt. Anthony Martinez. "The second victim in the vehicle also suffered multiple gunshot wounds and is now deceased."

MAGEC officers -- the gang officers from Fresno Police Department and the sheriff's office -- were on the scene. Fresno Police later said the shooting was is gang related.

Fulton Street and the highway off ramps in the area were shut down as the investigation took place. The slow lane of eastbound Highway 180 near Marks Avenue was also closed for a few hours.

This is the second time in six weeks that a shooting victim has crashed on Fulton Street near the 180. Homicide detectives arrested a suspect in that other incident after about three weeks.
