Kevin Elia, 21, admitted to attacking his mother, then killing his father when he stepped in to help. Bradley Elia, 58, suffered blunt-force trauma to his head in the December attack. He died a few days later.
Kevin's mother and his uncle both said on Monday that Kevin suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. They were upset he didn't get a mental evaluation before agreeing to a plea deal. But prosecutors say Elia's confession was coherent and showed he knew the difference between right and wrong.
Elia will serve 22 years to life.
