A combination of confusing paperwork and mistaken identity led to the brief release of an accused killer from the Fresno County Jail earlier this week.

Manuel Villareal, 23, has been in jail since 2012 for a murder in Kerman.

Court documents obtained by Action News show Villareal was allowed to walk out of the jail on Tuesday. It turns out that he wasn't supposed to be released. Villareal is back in custody after being re-arrested on Wednesday.

Villareal and another man were initially arrested in January 2012 in connection with the murder of 18-year-old Marcus Lynn Snowden three months earlier. Villareal is still awaiting trial for Snowden's death.
