Highway Patrol Sgt. Leonard Sherman told Action News someone called from a service station at Highway 99 and Ashlan to report a suspicious vehicle.
Sgt. Leonard Sherman added, "They reported the vehicle pulling in to the parking lot and saw collision damage, the vehicle smoking."
When officers arrived they discovered the driver and two passengers trying to clean the damaged front end of the truck. After questioning all three they took the driver into custody. He's identified as Guadalupe Lucio Lucero Caloca. He's 51 and from Madera. He's facing felony hit-and-run, charges that could have perhaps been avoided if he would have stayed at the scene.
"You are obligated by law if you are involved in a collision to stay at the scene," explained Sgt. Leonard Sherman. "So again, if you panic or make that decision to leave the scene, wise up quickly and call."
The truck is registered to Sunrise Farm Labor of Huron. Action News has learned the driver of the truck has been previously cited for speeding and driving under the influence. But the CHP says it doesn't appear alcohol was a factor in this case.
The name of the victim has not yet been made public.
