SANGER, Calif. (KFSN) -- Dozens of people with a passion for things that go bump in the night are showing off their scary skills. Zombies, vampires and ghouls were among those at Hobb's Grove on Sunday hoping to join the boo crew.

Every October, the Grove transforms into one of the top haunts in the state. On Sunday, staff members were looking for about a dozen actors and makeup artists to help make it especially terrifying.

"There was a guy who showed up today on stilts and was all made up. He stood about maybe 9, 10 feet tall. That's very impressive," haunt designer Chris Giese said.

"Oh my goodness, it couldn't be much more fun. There's games, there's people here to talk to, all kinds of cool costumes to look at, new ideas to think of. I mean, what could be better? We get to hang around with a bunch of nerds and dress up," applicant Tomi X said.

Organizers say most of their crew returns every year, making new spots a rarity. Those selected will attend Ghoul School in late September.

Hobb's Grove opens for the season Oct. 2.
