From the farm to ketchup
HURON, Calif. (KFSN) -- Tomato harvest is underway at Los Gatos Tomato Products in Huron.
Tomato harvest is in full swing in the Central Valley and we're looking for the perfect pick.
The company harvest tomatoes from all over the Central Valley, from Bakersfield to Los Banos area. They harvest about 180 acres per day and 18,000 acres per season. The plant has the capacity to process over 1 million tons of tomatoes during the 100 day season -- or 8 percent of California's tomatoes.
Los Gatos Tomato Products in Huron, California gave us a tour of their facility which processes tomatoes into tomato paste. They say about 85 percent of their product ends up in ketchup, but it is also used for pizza sauces, and barbeque sauces.
The Central Valley produces about 30 percent of the world's tomatoes.
