CIF playoff changes in football
As we head into the Central Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, some may not know that each Valley champion this season will have a chance to win a state title.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- As we head into the Central Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, some may not know that each Valley champion this season will have a chance to win a state title.

Action News stopped by Division III school Fresno High Monday. Despite a 9-1 record, Warriors got a 5th seed in the bracket. In years past, there would be no chance they'd get a crack at a regional bowl game and thus no chance at a state bowl game even if they won out. But with this new format, every section champion will get a shot regardless of seeding or politics. That's something longtime valley head coach Ray Reyes approves of. "I think it's very exciting. I know the kids want it, I don't think they know what they're getting themselves into. It's a great opportunity and look, Washington Union a few years ago took it all the way and won state. So, it can happen" added Reyes.

Again, all six section champs will get a shot at state. But to even things out, Division I, III, and V valley champions will be grouped in the Northern Section. Divisions II, IV, and VI will stay in the Southern Section. Regional bowl games will take place December 11th & 12th. State bowls will be played a week later on December 18th & 19th.

It's going from five state bowl games to 13.
