Fresno State Student Union could be getting a facelift

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno State could see a bold new union. That's the theme of a facility proposal two years in the works. The new building would complement the Henry Madden Library and the existing Student Union-- a trifecta of campus progress and now students are getting input.

"We're looking at the possibility of another signature building on our campus. I think there was a lot of people in awe of what the facility would look like," said Dr. Frank Lamas, VP Student Affairs.

Forums conducted by Dr. Lamas are aimed at getting student feedback.

"For us, it's just really important that we keep up and we have the right facilities for the education of our students."

The proposed 100,000-square foot facility would replace the University Center and Keats Building.

The existing Student Union was first built in the 1960's when the student population was 10,000. Since then, the campus community has more than doubled in size, and the project is aimed at relieving those growing pains.

"Kinda of a centralized place on campus where students can meet, have meetings where they feel they have a home on campus," said Kaitlyn Sims, Associated Students VP External Affairs.

Though the extra study space is well received by students the soonest the building would be up and running is in around four years. Sims said the amount of student engagement shows they're committed to their school's legacy.

"The student union is something people are passionate about-- about bringing a great centralized hub to campus."

"It's not only going to take a referendum, and the potential of higher student fees, but it's going to take people in the community," said Dr. Lamas.

Any hike in student fees wouldn't start until after construction is complete.

The next student forum is April 27th, but the soonest students would vote on it is 2017.
