Local high school students enjoyed eye-opening visit to several companies

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- It wasn't your typical field trip for some Washington Union High students who toured Scelzi Enterprises to see what kind of manufacturing jobs could be available to them.

For Andrew Adame, it was more like a business trip. The visit opened his eyes to a career path.

"I'm interested in mechanics and doing this kind of work so I probably want to come back and ask for a job and get a job here," said Adame. "Yeah, it's nice. It's something I'm interested in."

Scelzi Enterprises makes custom truck bodies. The company is always looking for people who can paint or do prep work, welders, and machine operators.

Angel Toopoozian of Scelzi Enterprises served as the group's tour guide.

"We need from a general labor guy to an engineer draftsman. We need everyone and if they have any of those skills we'll take that and run with that."

There were 120 students from 10 Fresno County high schools who toured a dozen company sites to learn more about manufacturing.

"If our kids don't get an opportunity to have that exposure to see what people do for a livelihood then how they can they make a choice about what they want to do for the rest of their life," said Jim Yovino, Superintendent.

Yovino said this unique opportunity can change a student's life.

In addition to Scelzi Enterprises kids also visited other companies like Gap Incorporated and Sunrise Medical.
