President Barack Obama's former pastor spoke at Fresno State
Organizers say they chose Jeremiah Wright to participate in their guest lecture series to highlight prominent African Americans in our country.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Rev. Jeremiah Wright is a well-known pastor who led a Chicago church for decades. He officiated President Barack Obama's marriage ceremony to the First Lady and also baptized their daughters. But Wright drew controversy after insinuating American brought the 9/11 attacks on themselves. Organizers say they chose Wright to participate in their guest lecture series to highlight prominent African Americans in our country.

"This is a university. This is a place of learning so for me to promote critical dialogue, that promotes thought, that's my job," said Fresno State professor Dr. T. Hasan Johnson.

Wright defended his remarks Monday night saying they were taken out of context. Organizers say his appearance was paid for using a more than $7,000 grant.
