FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Hundreds of students from across California are in Fresno this week, showing off some valuable life skills and learning about leadership.

The 68th annual FHA-HERO State Leadership Conference kicked off Saturday and runs through Tuesday at the convention center. The event focuses on home economics careers and technology. The students will take part in workshops and competitions that range from food service to fashion and interior design to hospitality, tourism and recreation.

"Today we have students competing in commercial foods competition at the Institute of Technology. We also have students at the Fresno Convention Center competing in culinary arts display, fashion and interior design, and many other events," said Melissa Webb with the California Department of Education.

The students can win scholarships and other prizes worth about $700,000.
