'Fight for Water' draws in huge crowds
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- With laced gloves and ringing bells, the fifth "Fight for Water" was a knockout.
The event has grown to the point that it was held at the Save Mart Center. Officials estimate over 13,000 people filled the arena Saturday night. But the event itself, and the cause behind it, has stayed the same.
Organizers, including valley boxer Jose Ramirez and his team, continue to bring attention to our state's drought crisis and water shortage issues. Their call for increased water storage, like the proposed Temperance Flat Dam, is getting louder, and they hope it makes its way to Sacramento.
California Latino Water Coalition executive director Mario Santoyo said Saturday night's event has drawn tons of valley farmers, farmworkers, and those in agricultural business who support the cause and will enjoy tonight's fight.
"This is a community effort, everybody understands how water affects everything in the valley," Santoyo said. "So, what you're going to see today is a composite of everyone."
The headliner for this event is Avenal native and undefeated Jose Ramirez. He is expected to put on a great show with hopes of advancing his successful boxing career.
