A program is helping Fresno students get started in the workplace and the restaurant industry

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Some Roosevelt High School students received some lessons in the classroom about how to land their first job. Students say looking for a paid position can be a bit intimidating.

"It's scary, but to have a job it'd actually be really fun," said Esmeralda Perez, student.

Perez is a senior and wants to work after she graduates in June. On Tuesday, she got some good tips from the Force in Training program, which brings restaurant pros to schools to teach students about how to land a job.

"The first job is really important. It's what makes you who you are for the rest of your life. If you get a job and don't take it seriously, then it will affect your next job," said Zachary Stewart, Wienerschnitzel Area Manager.

Stewart motivated young people to apply for jobs, even if they do not have experience. He also reminded them as a part of the job process to fill out a resume properly, come properly dressed, with a good attitude and a willingness to work.

Instructors said the program helps students realize they can work their way up to success.

"It's really cool for them to see that connection. That there is something I can do after high school and look at these success stories that are local, and I think makes it more personal for these kids and motivates them," said Justin Cardella, instructor.

Students said they now feel a little bit more empowered to search for their first job.

About 50 schools across the state of California are participating in the FIT program.
