Summer Food Service program distributing meals over summer to Valley kids
The USDA's Summer Food Service program has begun distributing meals at dozens of schools and other locations in Fresno County.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Summer vacation isn't all sun and fun for many kids. More than 85,000 school children in Fresno County are at risk of hunger without access to school meals. But there are free alternatives when the class is not in session.

The USDA's Summer Food Service program has begun distributing meals at dozens of schools and other locations in Fresno County.

These are free, healthy meals including milk for children of all ages.

The program is also educational, teaching kids where much of their food comes and the importance of a balanced diet and exercise.

You can text the word "FOOD", or "COMIDA" for Spanish speakers to "877-877" to find the free summer lunch program near you.
