Father-son team wins Fresno State's first-ever hot dog eating contest

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A new Fresno State tradition was born on campus on Saturday. Seven teams of two competed in the university's first-ever hot dog eating contest. Competitors wolfed down as many jumbo dogs and buns as they could in just two minutes.

Father-son team "The Irish Mafia" walked away the winners, eating five and a half Bulldog hot dogs. That may not sound impressive, but each one is about 8 inches long and weighs about 1/5 of a pound.

John and Tim O'Rourke say they took inspiration from a world eating champ for Saturday's competition. "If anything, we went with the Kobayashi strategy from Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest with the dunking of the bun and dog in the water and swallow it."

The first place title came with a pair of medals, Gibson Farm Market gift baskets and a Maya Cinemas gift basket as well.
