'It can't possibly stand:' Fresno Unified trustee Terry Slatic responds to 6-0 vote for his censure

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Signs with a demand: Resign or Recall.

Parents and community members carried these signs into the meeting where Fresno Unified Board Members approved to censure trustee Terry Slatic.

"I fully support the censure, I just wish there was more I could do,"

Veva Islas and the other five trustees all voted to approve the censure.

The vote comes on the heels of Slatic facing backlash for several alleged cases of misconduct, including a claim that he threatened a group of Bullard High cheerleaders if they spoke about a controversial "blackface" video.

"The things he has done, and shown on the media, and treated people, no one should have to walk around threatening their life," said Aindra Evans.

Evans was one of the many parents who spoke at the meeting and said she plans to file a restraining order on behalf of one of the Bullard Cheerleaders.

"We need to stick together, and this with the racism needs to stop," she said.

In the past few months, several investigations regarding Slatic's conduct were released, the cost of these investigations is more than $100,000.

"Those things were included to make a statement about how serious this misconduct is, and how important it is for him to take corrective action," Islas said.

Under this censure, Slatic cannot participate in certain committees unless he completes an anger management course.

The trustees also asked they not pay for his legal defense, and refuse indemnity.

Slatic says the board cannot legally take anything away him, and he won't stand down.

"This will not be allowed to stand because it can't possibly stand legally...there's no obligation for sanctioning. You can tell me I'm ugly, but you can't take away my ability to represent my voters," he said.

Attendees were visibly pleased with the board's decision, however, many say they're still working on a recall.
