MADERA, Calif. (KFSN) -- A day meant for joy quickly turned to tragedy after 45-year-old Estevanico Goldsmith was shot and killed Christmas morning.
Police arrived to the 1000 block of Clinton St. around 4:30 in the morning to find the victim who later died from his injuries.
Madera police believe the shots were fired after an argument but so far, no witnesses are coming forward.
Sgt. Mark Trukki said, "There were well a dozen people at the location however, not everyone is being forthcoming with info. We're asking they cooperate with our investigation and be truthful."
We spoke with Goldsmith's former father in law who had seen him at church a day prior to the shooting on Christmas Eve.
Victim's ex-father in law, Sammie Neely said, "He was happy when I spoke to him on Christmas Eve and he came to church and we all got out last... didn't know it was going to be our last goodbyes."
Neely says Goldsmith had been a member of his church for more than a decade. He tells us the victim was married into the family for five years. He says Goldsmith leaves behind two sons and an 11-year-old daughter who are now grieving the loss of their father.
"We're all still in shock and trying to recover so it's like we're still numb. He's a decent person. Very good hearted, loving person," Neely said.
Investigators are following several leads in hopes of finding the suspect. Meanwhile, the family is asking anyone with information on the shooter, to come forward.
"When somebody's doing things like that, they become a threat to the entire community, so we're encouraging the community to come out with any information."
Police are still following several leads as to what the argument was about, and tips regarding the location of the suspect.
They say any information is helpful, and even a small tip could help solve the case.
Anyone who knows anything is asked to call the Madera Police Department.
