MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) -- Several apartment units are destroyed and nearly a dozen people are displaced after an early morning fire ripped though a complex in the North Valley.
The fire happened at an apartment complex on T Street and 3rd Street in Merced. Several firefighters were still on the scene late Wednesday morning pulling debris out of the apartments and starting their investigation. They say the fire is suspicious because the it started in a vacant unit and it quickly spread from there.
Firefighters say four to five units are destroyed, and all 11 of the units have at least some damage. The first crews to arrive this morning saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the middle of the complex.
Everyone made it out safely, but about a dozen people are displaced. The Red Cross is now helping them find other places to stay. There is no estimate yet on the dollar amount of the damage, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
