Spanish Central Valley Alzheimer's Caregiver & Wellness Conference

Tuesday, May 3, 2016

Every 66 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer's. More than 5 million Americans are living with the disease, 600,000 of them right here in California. It is the 6th leading cause of death. Latino's are one and a half times more likely than non-Latinos to develop Alzheimer's. In California there are 92,000 Latinos living with Alzheimer's and that number is expected to increase to over 278,000 in 5 years.

Approximately 1.5 million family members in California provide billion hours of unpaid care, every year, as they help their loved one face this fatal disease. Many of which arrive late to work, need to leave early, take leaves of absence, reduce work to part-time or leave work entirely to care for another. Due to the physical and emotional toll of caregiving, caregivers had over 9 billion in additional health care cost of their own in 2015.

But help is available to those who care for someone with Alzheimer's. ABC30, The Alzheimer's Association, Valley Caregiver Resource Center and the UCSF Fresno Alzheimer & Memory Center is offering a Caregiver Conference in Spanish to address the needs of Latino families impacted by this disease, on June 4, 2016 at Fresno State, that will include Medical Professionals and resources to help.
