2 men accused of killing 2 people, including one of their fathers, will stand trial for double murder and robbery

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Two men accused of killing a man they never knew, and accidentally shooting one of their father's in the process, will stand trial for double murder and robbery.

Much of the testimony over the past days was straight from the suspect's mouths in videotaped police interviews. The judge determined their is enough evidence to believe both were involved.

Detectives questioning Jorge Rodriguez finally had enough of his changing versions of what happened on Balch and Winery that left two men dead.

"I mean, let's keep it real. I know you know what I am saying. Cause I don't buy that story and I know you don't either. It came out of your lips, but I mean that's not what happened. The ball's in your court, man," said one detective during questioning.

Those words from homicide detectives finally got the man they believed pulled the trigger, to open up more.

"So who pulls out the gun and shoots Calvin? Because that's his name," asked the detective.

"Sonar," ansewered Rodriguez.

"Did Sonar shoot his dad on accident too? Because he got shot in the back of the head," asked the detective.

Detectives determined Rodriguez left out key details, including his own involvement in the double murder of Calvin Reese, and Gustavo (Sonar) Duenas' father, Jose. Jose was with his son and Rodriguez moments before he was shot to death.

Thursday, the judge decided there is enough evidence to hold both defendants on double murder charges and robbery.

Text messages shown during the probable cause hearing revealed Duenas and Rodriguez were planning a robbery the day of the deadly crimes.

"It may have been that Mr. Duenas, Gustavo Duenas realized much later as he progressed toward Mr. Reese that his father was right there. And that yes, it's a tragic outcome for Mr. Duenas and his family, that in the process of his committing his conspiracy act that he is committing a murder on a person, his own father. Which is a natural consequence when you take a gun and you go after a person to rob them," said Hon. Houry Sanderson, Fresno County Superior Court.

During taped interviews, each defendant admits being present but independently blames the other for firing the deadly rounds. Many of Rodriguez's responses were rather evasive.

"Like I said, we were at the wrong place at the wrong time. I don't want nothing to happen to me, I don't want nothing to happen to any of us," said Rodriguez.

The family of Reese was in court during the preliminary hearing. They believe the crime against Reese was racially motivated.
