9-year-old boy hit by car

Merced Police Department responded to R Street and Loughborough Drive for an injury traffic collision. When officers arrived they found a 9-year-old boy pinned under a 2002 Toyota Camry.

Richard Petrick, 84, was driving his 2002 Toyota Camry west on Loughborough Drive turning right onto R Street. As Petrick was making his turn, the boy jumped off the sidewalk, to avoid the rainwater in the gutter,

directly in the path of the Toyota Camry. Petrick traveled approximately 50 feet before he realized he had struck the child and stopped.

He was transported to Valley Children's Hospital. The severity of the child's injuries are unknown.

Drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the collision. Petrick stayed on scene and is cooperating fully with investigators.

The collision investigation is ongoing.
