Woman shoots boyfriend, kills self in River Park area apartment
Action News has learned one person is dead at a northwest Fresno apartment complex early Saturday morning.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Northwest Fresno community remains in shock after a domestic dispute escalated to a shooting leaving one person injured and his shooter dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

It was just after midnight when Fresno police were dispatched to the Lexington Apartments on North Glenn Avenue. According to police when they arrived and tried to approach the unit they heard a single gunshot.

Later they would learn the 38-year-old woman living in the apartment had shot her boyfriend several times before turning the gun on herself.

Lt. Joe Gomez of the Fresno Police Department said, "SWAT forms a perimeter around the apartment and we just got the search warrant signed and we were ready to go up the front door opens and the injured male that was shot he drags himself out to the front porch."

At that point, police say they did not know the status of the woman inside or whether she was armed. The incident would unfold for several hours prompting the evacuation of neighboring units.

Bryce Esparza was not evacuated but says she woke up to the sounds of sirens.

"I just texted my husband I told him I don't feel safe here. Because he works at nights so I told him I really don't feel safe," Esparza said.

Another Lexington Apartment resident did not want to speak on camera but described the terrifying moments she and her son were instructed, by police to stay indoors and move to the south end of their apartment away from any potential gunfire.

Neighbors say this was not the first time police were called to that apartment unit. Police have confirmed just two days prior officers were called to the same residence for what they say was a physical altercation between the couple.

"No one was arrested at the time during that time the female was very intoxicated," Lt. Gomez explained.

The gunshot victim was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition but expected to survive.
