Right after the lights automatically went off at a Parlier park Sunday night, investigators say several suspects armed with guns shot three young men who were working out.

One of the victims was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. They are all expected to survive. On Monday, the Parlier police chief said he will not surrender to terrorists.

Investigators say a Parlier High School student and two young adults were exercising at Veterans Park Sunday night, when they were approached by two to four armed suspects.

"There was some comments that were made by the suspects, but the victims were in such fright for their lives," said Parlier Police Chief David Cerda. "These are innocent kids. They don't engage in that type of violent behavior."

Detectives say the victims, who were all shot in the back, are not gang members, and have no criminal history. Officers are puzzled as to why the group was targeted and trying to figure out if the shooting may have been a case of mistaken identity.

The police chief said he visited the victims at the hospital overnight to console them and offer reassurance.

"I told them that we will certainly do everything in our possibility within our means to solve this crime, and we appreciate their cooperation," said Cerda.

Israel Lara is the Parlier city manager. He says the victim who suffered the most serious injuries is the son of Parlier City Councilwoman Yolanda Padilla.

"Just like any parent, she is very emotional. She was hoping the best for her son, and my understanding from last night -- all three boys will be recovering so we're just praying," said Lara.

Officers say the suspects covered half of their faces with handkerchiefs and left in a white or beige compact car. They are now looking at surveillance video that may provide more clues about the suspects' identity or specifics about the car.

Extra officers will be patrolling Veterans Park Monday night. Investigators still need more witnesses to come forward. Police are offering a $2,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.
