FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Nicolas Appert sat with his head down during the sentencing before learning he would spend thirteen years in prison.

Leoni was on his motorcycle last April, headed to work in Lemoore. But he only made it to Riverdale before he was struck and killed instantly. Since then, it's been the worst 10 months of his families' life.

Kelly Leoni remembers each moment of April 24th, 2017. But, what happened and how it left her feeling she wants to forget -- her husband of 24 years was killed.

Twenty-one year old Nicolas Appert sat mostly with his head down, listening to the emotional statements through a French interpreter. He's here on an expired Visa and his attorney said became addicted to meth which led to his life spiraling out of control.

The effects of what happened have caused everything from panic attacks, to sporadic tearful outbursts from his daughter, Ashley.

"People have told me I shouldn't hold onto the hurt and anger I feel. But they don't and probably won't ever understand unless it happens to them," Ashley said.

Leoni had become a grandfather for the first time shortly before his unexpected death. His greatest joy was his granddaughter, Ravyn. His death left so many unfinished plans and regrets -- for his widow the pain is constant.

Appert did not speak, but his attorney read a letter he wrote apologizing for his actions. He begged for forgiveness and mercy.
