Visalia Police investigate domestic dispute involving two shootings

VISALIA, Calif. (KFSN) -- Police say Abraham (or Abran) Medrano made two visits to his girlfriend's house on North Mooney Boulevard Monday night.

The first time, the 47-year-old shot one round at his girlfriend and her roommate during an argument. He missed, left the house, and about an hour later, came back, with the same handgun. But police say he wasn't the only one armed with a gun this time -- one of the women had a rifle.

"Medrano and this female victim began struggling over the rifle, when one round was discharged from the rifle, which traveled through an interior wall, and struck the second female occupant inside the home," Visalia Police Sgt. Damon Maurice said.

Sgt. Maurice says that woman fired more shots at Medrano, and he was hit by bullet fragments. Investigators believe she shot in self-defense. They say the other woman who was shot was brought to the hospital, where she had surgery. She's expected to be okay.

Police aren't saying which woman is Medrano's girlfriend.

Medrano, according to the Tulare County Superior Court, has two felony charges on his record, including a drug offense from 2014. In addition to being booked for two counts of attempted murder, police say he's also facing an additional charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

"He's not giving us a whole lot of information right now, so we're not really clear on what the exact motive was for going to the residence in the first place," Sgt. Maurice said.

Police say the women let Medrano inside the house both times. He could be arraigned in court as soon as Thursday.
