Growing financial concerns for Yosemite Unified, parents asking entire school board to resign

OAKHURST, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Yosemite Unified School District is at risk of insolvency. Parents are scrambling to figure out how to save more than $2 million by March 15th.

"To cut $2.3 million means we are assuming as concerned parents that will be sports, could be theatre, could be arts that could be advanced placement classes, that could be IB classes," said YUSD parent.

Anita Johnson says they have created the YUSD Community Action Team so the community can come together and figure out a solution.

Recently, the Madera County Office of Education gained fiscal oversight over the school district and has assigned a fiscal advisor to help the district's financial problems.

This comes after the Madera County superintendent determined the school's budget falls short of the state's required reserve balance.

Johnson says extracurricular, transportation, and jobs are at risk of being cut.

"It's going to be interesting to see how they're going to rip off the band-aid to fix this. Our board and the interim superintendent has assured us that they have a plan," said Johnson.

"I have a good relationship with the teachers, and I would hate for their situation to change," said YUSD parent Blanca Olmedo.

Parents are asking the school board members to step down.

"We've started a recall process on two board members, we have asked for the resignation of all the board members," said Johnson.

Action News tried to get in contact the Madera County School District, but our calls were not returned. Parents and members are the community are worried.

With a long road to recovery ahead, they will meet tonight to start brainstorming ways they can save the school.
