Merced County ATV crash leaves man dead

A Merced man is dead after authorities say he crashed an ATV into a truck. It happened along the canal bank behind Drake Avenue south of Santa Fe Road in Merced County just before 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The California Highway Patrol says the 37-year-old victim was driving the ATV at an unknown speed when he collided with the front tire of a Franklin County Water District truck that was going about 5 miles per hour.

The ATV driver was ejected and later died at the hospital. It's not known yet if drugs or alcohol were involved.
