The Unsung Heroes Living History project held its second annual Veterans Appreciation Luncheon Sunday in central Fresno.

The event is designed to pay tribute and preserve the legacy of African-American service members. Organizer Lisa Daniels says she started the project 15 years ago after trying to research black history and running into dead ends.

"It's an honor to serve our country and no matter what went on in society," Daniels said, "These people fought for the country that they believed in."

The project has now documented experiences from at least 200 African-American veterans ranging from World War I to Operation Iraqi Freedom.
