FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Cal Fire said the Air National Guard is inspecting the malfunction on its C-130 air tanker that dropped retardant on countless homes and cars Saturday.

The release happened a little bit after 5:30 and affected a few hundred people.

Authorities said it started near First Street and Escalon Avenue by Ahwahnee Middle School. It was then released through River Park and west of Blackstone across Van Ness Before traveling all the way to the Bluffs-- a residential neighborhood-- just west of Highway 41.

In some areas the retardant dropped ranged in width from 50 feet to 300 feet.

Cal Fire is encouraging residents who have not washed the residue off to do so immediately with soap and water.

Anyone who needs to file a claim should contact the Department of General Services.
