FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- One person is recovering in the hospital after police say he caused an explosion cooking drugs.

It happened just before 8 p.m. on Tuesday at an apartment near Maple Avenue and Shields Avenue. Investigators say the man was cooking honey oil or marijuana on his kitchen stove when the explosion happened -- blowing out the windows to his apartment.

Neighbors were eating dinner in the apartment above when they heard the explosion. They helped put out the flames with a fire extinguisher.

"It's a felony to do this type of thing. It not only endangers the person, it endangers everyone around them. Can you imagine if in an apartment complex, your walking by the apartment, and all of the windows blow out," said Lt Mike Doyle, Fresno Police Department, "I mean there was huge shards of glass on the grass. I mean, that stuff is flying out. So it not only endangers the person it endangers the public."

The suspect suffered burns to his hands and legs. He is expected to survive and will face felony charges.
