Baby dies after being left in car in Central Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Family and neighbors are grieving the loss of 11-month-old Terrell Ayers Jr. of Fresno. Police officers said the baby boy was found unconscious inside a hot, black car. And that his grandmother left him for more than an hour at a Central Fresno apartment complex.

Rolls of crime scene tape wound around the apartment complex while detectives swarmed the inside and outside-- families stood in disbelief.

"That was an innocent baby that passed away," said Felicia Kendrick, neighbor.

Families said they heard a grandmother's heart-wrenching cry Tuesday afternoon after realizing she left her grandson in the back of the car. By the time, someone called officers an hour later the baby was not responsive.

"You could hear her across the complex screaming because her grandbaby was laying on the ground and they were trying to do CPR. You know, she could just physically-- she couldn't really stand, she couldn't take it she watching her grandkid," said a Neighbor.

Child abuse detectives documented every inch of the parking lot. They haven't reached a conclusion on this case but neighbors told us they were sure this was an accident.

"We were just saying it always happens to the good people. Many grandmothers out here don't even care for their grandkids-- she was just a good grandmother, a wonderful grandmother, she doesn't deserve this," said Kendrick.

The same words of comfort flowed through this complex. On a street with so many young families, almost everyone had kind words. They said the grandmother was devoted, looking after three grandkids.

"I know that she didn't mean for it to happen and that if she could she would take her own life to give her grandson his life back," said Kendrick.

Now a family once four strong is missing its youngest one.

Officers weren't able to talk to the grandmother, they said she was so emotional about what happened they also had to take her to the hospital.
