Bicyclist injured, driver arrested after Southeast Fresno hit-and-run

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno police have arrested a driver who struck a bicyclist and took off. The crash happened before 9 p.m. Friday on Kings Canyon Road just west of Chestnut Avenue in Southeast Fresno.

The driver was found hiding around the corner. Police say he appeared to be heavily intoxicated. His car was found ditched a few houses down, with heavy damage to the windshield.

Investigators say the suspect dragged the victim's bike beneath his Mustang until he stopped the car. Police say the victim was crossing Kings Canyon Road when he was struck. Fortunately, the victim wasn't dragged as well.

Police say the suspect -- only identified as a man in his 20s -- has not been able to give them a statement. He was found about an hour after the crash, hiding in his girlfriend's house.

"He was hiding in the bedroom; we had to force the door open. He appears to be very intoxicated," said Sgt. Eddie Barrios of the Fresno Police Department.

Police called for paramedics to have the suspect treated -- likely for heavy intoxication. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect leaving a nearby liquor store before striking the bicyclist. The suspect is facing several criminal charges, including felony DUI and hit-and-run.

Police say the victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
