FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The defense for a Caruthers teacher under arrest for having child porn may be clearer after his first appearance before a judge.

Gregory Carr, 46, showed up to court with his wife and family by his side. He was arrested two weeks ago after deputies found images of young girls on at least one, computer hard drive.

Carr was only in court a few minutes Thursday, the first time he has ever had a brush with the law or problem with his employment. He's been a teacher for 16 years in Caruthers, and according to his attorney Chuck Magill, buys all of his computers second hand.

"I know that Mr. Carr has had an interest in computers since he was like 10-years-old, and he has a lot of computer material. A lot of zip drives-- I want to say they seized over 60 to 70 zip drives. But they were things he collected from other people, the hard drives from other people."

Swiss Police notified Fresno County deputies after getting a hit on a computer that belonged to Carr. In a search of his home, several computers were taken. Action news has learned one of the computers seized was an old one owned by the Caruthers Unified School District that Carr purchased.

Right now the teacher has bailed out of jail but remains on paid leave.

"It's devastating to him and his family. He's a very good man and has been a very good husband for a number of years, and it's kinda shocking," said Magill.

According to a search warrant when detectives interviewed Carr he admitted to looking up pornography on the internet. If convicted, he could spend up to three years in prison.
