FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A drunk driver who was thrust into the political arena last year received the harshest possible punishment on Friday.

Ricardo Rojas Soto was the subject of a campaign commercial in which Elizabeth Egan accused Lisa Smittcamp of being soft on crime. With a reluctant witness in a domestic violence case, Smittcamp reached a plea deal with Soto in 2011. He stayed out of prison on probation.

Two years later, he drove drunk and killed Jodi Ward. On Friday, a judge sentenced Soto to 10 years in prison.

Ward's family said in court that both families come out losers, but they're glad justice was served.
