Dylan Noble's parents defend his actions on day of officer-involved shooting

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The parents of Dylan Noble defended their son's actions just one day after Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer released body camera footage of a fatal police shooting that claimed his life.

His mother and stepfather opened up on Action News' partner Powertalk Radio Thursday afternoon.

The shooting has polarized the city of Fresno.

"It was just out of character. For me to see to what he was doing, I was like don't come back, don't do it," said Jason Nelson, step-father.

And one that Dylan Noble's mother still can't bring herself to watch.

"Numb. Disbelief. A bad dream," said Veronica Nelson, mother.

Since the deadly encounter on June 25th, the family's not only dealt with the loss but also the challenge of explaining Dylan's death to his younger brothers.

"He goes 'daddy, is it true when I wish upon a star that Dylan would come back.' I didn't know what to say, I just sat and hugged him, I said 'no, he's with god,'" said Nelson.

Noble's stepfather has seen the video and the play by play account Chief Dyer provided on Wednesday.

You can hear the roughly 30 commands officers give before opening fire.

Jason nelson said that aggressive behavior from police cost his son his life.

"Aiming at him, shouting commands. I will shoot you, I will shoot you. What 19-year-old would know what to do?"

"Part of it was based on the fact the individual didn't pull over. Part of it was information he shared during the interview. Part of it was the fact he was on a call about a man with a rifle," said Dyer.

The District Attorney's investigation is expected to wrap up in August.

There are also separate FBI and internal investigations. Chief Dyer said he will make a decision once all evidence in gathered.

"There are good cops, and there are bad cops. Just like there are good civilians and bad civilians," said Jason.

Those labels, in this case, have yet to be determined.
